How To Simply Create a Targeted Landing Page With Wordpress

by admin on December 1, 2009

When working with the Wordpress blog it is very easy to create new content. It is like creating a simple Word document. You can add your formatting, fonts, tables etc.

It is easy because Wordpress is designed to manage content simply. Your new page or post in a blog is nicely put inside a Wordpress theme, with all the graphics.

However, from time to time we need to create a simple landing page, without a Wordpress header, footer, sidebars, and other Wordpress features.

It is when we need to create a simple landing page, or squeeze page to capture leads, or create a landing page for our PPC Adwords campaign.

In this situation, we need a simple, clean landing page with one purpose (to get a lead or sale).

In this case, the standard Wordpress blog page is not sufficient, because it usually provides a lot of distractions for users. There are many other links the user can click, thus not having one “line of thought” in front of their eyes.

Some Wordpress themes provide this functionality. They simple have an additional page template for this purpose. This page template has no sidebars, headers, anything. You can design your landing page as you wish, simply by adding a new page.

The page template can be changed when editing or creating a new Wordpress page. Look at the right sidebar – there is a “Template” combo box. Here you can select a “Default Template” or a template without sidebars for a landing page (if supported by the current Wordpress theme).

When editing a Wordpress page with no sidebars, note that you have to usually also add a header and footer to it. So do not forget to add links to your main blog page or home, as well as important links to your privacy policy or contact pages.
